Harvest Monitoring

Harvest Monitoring2023

In Nunavik, wildlife management is a shared undertaking with governments holding the ultimate decision-making responsibility. However, there is a growing interest for community-led management initiatives, upstream of government-imposed restrictions. For most species, there is no reliable harvest data. The inability of Inuit to provide this information has weakened our credibility in the eyes of decision-makers. Because our needs cannot be quantified, they also risk being under-estimated when decisions are made.

This project aims to create a system to document Nunavik harvest in order to empower Inuit with information needed to effectively plan, implement and monitor local management actions. All data generated by the project will be Inuit-owned and used by Inuit, for Inuit.
